Acupuncture Treatment

What is acupuncture treatment and how does it work?

Acupuncture treatments starts with a deep respect for the human body and its innate ability to heal. In traditional Chinese medicine, we see pain and disease as a disruption of the body’s natural self-regulation. Acupuncture is a complete system of medicine that uses hair-thin needles to stimulate specific points on the body that restore its proper functioning.

What about side effects?

Side effects of acupuncture generally include

  • better sleep,
  • better digestion, and
  • an increased ability to handle stress.

Okay, what about negative side effects?
When performed properly by a skilled practitioner, acupuncture is one of the safest forms of health care in the world. Negative side effects are very rare and are usually limited to minor bruising or mild fatigue for up to 24 hours post-treatment. We practice Clean Needle Technique and only use single-use, sterilized needles, so infection is a non-issue.

Does acupuncture treatment hurt? What does it feel like?

Acupuncture treatments are typically very relaxing. Acupuncture needles are solid and hair-thin, so they feel nothing like getting a shot. Once a needle is set, you might feel a warmth, tingling, or heavy sensation that comes and goes during the treatment. Sensations should always be more interesting than uncomfortable! Once the needles are set (usually about 10-15 in a treatment), we’ll let you relax for 20-30 minutes. We won’t be at all surprised if you fall asleep. We take it as a compliment.

How quickly does it work? How many treatments do I need?

Short answer — it varies a lot. Slightly longer answer — Many people feel very relaxed right after acupuncture and then experience a noticeable improvement in symptoms around 4 – 24 hours after treatment. In the beginning, the improvement may last from a few days to a week or so. Each treatment adds to the cumulative healing effect. We’re always looking for a reduction in the frequency, intensity, and duration of symptoms.

Is this one of those things I have to do forever?

Nope! We only want you to come in as often as you need/want to. Many of our patients come in once or twice a month or even just a few times a year to de-stress and re-balance. We think that’s swell. We’re here for you – not the other way around. You are always in charge of your care, and we are here to support you in feeling your best.
